City to Begin Charging Convenience Fee for Credit and Debit Card Payments

Post Date:08/09/2017 8:23 PM
Beginning Monday, September 11, the City of Germantown will begin charging a 2.5% convenience fee to customers who pay utility fees and property taxes using a credit or debit card.

The fee will cover the transaction costs charged by credit card companies to the City. When customers use a credit or debit card to pay, the company providing the card, Visa for example, charges a processing fee to the vendor receiving the payment. It’s the price businesses pay for the convenience of allowing customers to pay using a card. For years, the City has absorbed these costs. The new fee is expected to save the City of Germantown up to $75,000 per year in transaction fees.

Customers may avoid the 2.5% convenience fee by paying using cash, check or bank draft. To sign up for paperless utility billing or to pay using auto bank draft, visit For more information, contact Linda Rathje at or 757-7221.
