About Us
The Germantown Animal Shelter strives to place dogs and cats in good adoptive homes. The shelter also houses pets that have strayed from their homes until their owners can be located.
The shelter has space for 15 dogs and 23 cats. The shelter accepts animals from Germantown residents only; animals are not accepted when the shelter is at capacity.
Visit the Shelter
The shelter is at 7700 Southern Avenue, in the Public Services Complex in Germantown (east of Memphis). From Poplar Avenue, travel south on Germantown Road. On the north side of the railroad tracks, turn left on Southern Avenue. Proceed beyond the stop sign to the third building on the left. The building has a sign identifying the shelter.
Hours of Operation
The shelter is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Animals may be adopted or a lost pet reclaimed during those hours.
Adopting a Friend
Adoption fees are $67.50 for dogs and $57.50 for cats. The fees include shots, spaying/neutering, heartworm check, fecal testing and testing for feline leukemia in cats.
A veterinarian monitors the animals and treat illnesses. All pets are checked and cleared by a veterinarian before being eligible for adoption.
The shelter accepts checks and money orders; the shelter can not accept cash or credit cards.
Volunteers
The shelter welcomes volunteers who walk and bathe dogs, play with cats and help socialize the animals. Volunteers who can assist weekdays are currently needed. An applicant is required to attend a 20-minute orientation before being allowed to volunteer. An adult must accompany volunteers under 16 years of age. Euthanasia
Shelter personnel work diligently to place animals with new owners in a continuing effort to limit euthanasia. The Germantown Animal Shelter euthanizes animals based on strict criteria. When the shelter is full or when animals are seriously injured/ill or are deemed to be aggressive, euthanasia is an option at the shelter.
