Germantown has two dozen parks, sports complexes and other green spaces, covering more than 700 acres of recreational land. They provide athletic fields and courts, picnic areas, biking/walking trails and playgrounds, reflecting a Parks and Recreation department goal of placing recreational and leisure opportunities within a half mile of every home.
- Pets must be on a leash at all times in all parks, sports complexes, the Wolf River Nature Area and along the Greenway. By City ordinance, pet owners are responsible for removing animal waste.
- Parks are open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. unless otherwise posted or when sanctioned activities require extended hours.
- Safe parks are important in Germantown. Six full-time park rangers patrol and provide community information at every park location. If you need help, have a question or just want to have a friendly chat with a ranger about trees, wildlife or native plants, look for the uniformed park ranger in the green parks vehicles.
- Rangers are on duty daily, circulating through all the parks, fields and trails. Police also patrol within and around the parks. For concerns regarding the parks, contact the chief park ranger at 751-5702. For emergencies in the parks, call the police (911).
Winter Parks Schedule
The winter schedule for park facilities is in effect through mid-March. Tennis court lighting will be on until 9 p.m. each evening at C.O. Franklin and Municipal Parks. Tennis court lighting will be off at Cameron Brown Park, Dogwood Park, Farmington Park, Johnson Road Park, Riverdale Park and Houston Levee Park. Restrooms at field five in Cameron Brown Park, Johnson Road Pavilion, Houston Tennis, Greenway West and Municipal Park tennis courts will remain open. Sports facility restrooms will be closed with the exception of soccer facilities still open during soccer season. Call 757-7375 for more information.
Adopt-A-Park Program
To have positive outdoor experiences in neighborhood parks and municipal properties, these areas must be routinely patrolled, policed and enhanced. Safe, clean, attractive, litter-free outdoor areas are imperative to the assurance or quality of life experiences for everyone in the community. Though the department provides routine maintenance for all of these areas and facilities, the staff and resources are never enough to achieve the highest level of maintenance. This is where supplementation from volunteers and the development of ownership of these sites creates a win-win situation for all--the public, the park users, the volunteer groups and the Parks and Recreation department. If you have a group or business that is interested in becoming a partner with the City, call Pam Beasley at 757-7378. You really can make a difference.
For information about reserving pavilions, call 757-7376.
