Solid Waste Collection
The City of Germantown contracts with the private sector for collection of household waste, yard waste and recycling services. A four-year contract with All Star Waste Systems and Michael's Tree & Loader Service began July 1, 2006. The monthly fee is projected to remain at $24.15 for single-family homes through June, 2008. Household garbage, curbside rubbish, recyclables and yard waste are collected on the same day. All items must be ready for collection by 7 a.m. on the designated day. In weeks that include a holiday, collection is made one day later than the normal schedule.
Sand, dirt, gravel, concrete, bricks, stone, steel poles, ceramic tile and auto parts will not be collected. Call 757-7264 for information on how these materials can be disposed of on Amnesty Dumpster Day. Animal waste or litter will not be collected unless properly bagged.
2009 Holidays
See the 2009 holiday list and
collection schedule.
Household Waste
Household waste/garbage is collected once a week from containers at the back door or in the back yard of each residence. Garbage will not be collected from behind locked gates, in garages, carports or storage areas. Garbage cans must be visible, accessible, in one location, no larger than a 45 gallon container, and not weighing more than 50 pounds. Personal effects not intended for collection should be kept away from the collection area. Garbage cans used for storage bins should not be in the collection area. Collectors will not enter a yard or fenced area where dogs are present. If dogs are present inside fence area where garbage is kept, containers must be placed outside the fence for collection. Occupants must provide a safe and convenient area for collection of household garbage.

see a map of the garbage pickup schedule.
Waste materials should be bagged before placing in the garbage cans. Items that won't fit in the cans should be placed at curbside.
Homeowners may take garbage cans to the curb for collection by All Star Waste Systems. Containers should not be placed at the curb prior to 6 p.m. the day before collection and should be returned to their usual backyard location by 8 a.m. the day after collection.
Containers, trash or yard waste must be placed behind the curb, not in the gutter or street by 7 a.m. on your collection day..
Garbage and yard waste must be separated.
Cardboard boxes (that are not recycled - see recycling information below), furniture, appliances or similar bulky items must be placed at curbside for collection. For large quantities or extra heavy items, please call neighborhood services at 757-7263 in advance of your collection day to ensure the proper equipment is scheduled for that day.
Refrigerators, air conditioners, freezers, dehumidifiers, ice makers or any item that contains refrigerants will not be collected unless the refrigerant has been removed and tagged by a certified technician (in compliance with the Clean Air Act). State law requires that doors be removed from the appliance when placed at curb for collection.
Yard Waste
Homeowners can dispose of natural materials - tree limbs, leaves and grass clippings by placing them just behind the curb for pickup on the same day as pick up of household waste and recyclables in the neighborhood.
The contract with Michael's Tree & Loader Service does not impose any limitation on size of materials.
Materials should be in a clear bag or secured in a bundle so they can be cleanly and neatly lifted from the curb area by the mechanical arm and placed in the collection truck. Please do not place yard debris or bulky waste next to lamp posts, mail boxes, cable/utility boxes, walls, fences or landscaping. This may result in debris not being collected. Large items such as tree limbs and logs should be separate from bagged materials or small bundled items.
The City encourages homeowners not to place such materials at the curb until the afternoon or evening before the scheduled pick up.
If a yard maintenance or landscaping service or construction firm is used by a homeowner, the service is expected to take the natural refuse.
Every nurseryman or other person who cuts trees or shrubs as an independent contractor and not an employee of the occupant of the premises shall remove or cause to be removed all such yard trash from the premises services by him.
Note: Do not place construction wood such as fencing or decking with yard debris. This material can not be recycled with yard debris and is collected separately. Please call neighborhood services at 757-7263 to schedule a collection. (Resident generated material only).
The Neighborhood Services Department and Environmental Commission strongly urge
homeowners to practice grasscycling (leaving short clippings
on the lawn) and composting (layering dead leaves and vegetation
to decompose to form new soil). Composting seminars are offered at different times throughout the year.
Construction Debris
Homeowner generated construction material must be placed at the curb for collection. Small or loose resident generated construction material (lumber, sheet rock, wood pieces, etc.) must be placed in 32-gallon containers weighing no more than 50 pounds and placed at the curb. Collectors are not responsible for picking up small loose debris from the ground.
Removal of contractor generated construction debris is the responsibility of the contractor or resident/homeowner.
Recycling
Germantown residents are in the forefront of Tennessee cities with participation in the City's recycling program. About 75 percent of households regularly place recyclables in brown bins at curbside for pickup on the same day that household waste is collected. Free bins are provided. Call 757-7264 to request a bin.
Germantown's recyling facility is what is known as a dual-stream processor. This means there is one line for all fiber material (newspaper, cardboard, paperboard, office paper, junk mail, etc.) and another line for all co-mingled (plastic, cans, glass, etc.) items. The collection truck has two compartments and this in the reason for the separation of materials in the bin.
All Star Waste collects all glass, and aluminum and tin cans, #1 and #2 food containers, plastics and newspapers.
Place the newspapers (including glossy inserts, paperboard, corrugated cardboard which has been cut to the proper size, and junk mail) in a paper grocery bag and stack atop other discards in the bin.
Cardboard, both corrugated (shipping boxes, etc) and paperboard (product boxes – cereal, drinks, etc.) are acceptable with some limitations due to the size restrictions of the collection equipment.
All small paperboard boxes must be flattened. Corrugated cardboard boxes must be cut and can not be larger than 2 feet by 3 feet. If they are larger then they must be cut to this size or smaller for collection. Oversize cardboard will be collected as trash and not recycled. Place cardboard in the bin or if too large a pile place it under the bin for collection. Telephone books can be placed in recycle bins.
Do not include can lids, plastic lids or caps.
City residents can take used automotive oil (from their
personal vehicles) to a collection unit at the entrance
to the Public Services compound on Southern Avenue. The
service is free.
Magazines and books may also be donated to the Germantown Community Library for its "sale book" shelf or annual sale by the Friends of the Library.
Salvageable building materials, fixtures and home furnishings are accepted by Habitat by Humanity for reuse in house construction or resale at its store. Call for information or pickup.
Schnucks has containers for recycling plastic bags at the entrance to the store.
Amnesty Day
The City schedules an "amnesty dumpster" Saturday in the spring
and in the fall to collect odd materials. Dumpsters are placed
at two locations: the Public
Services Complex at 7700 Southern Avenue and Johnson Road Park
Homeowners are invited to bring all kinds of cast-offs to the dumpsters for free disposal except those items which are accepted in the regular weekday collection. Household hazardous materials (paints, chemicals, etc.) are not accepted.
Hazardous Waste
Shelby County government offers all county residents an opportunity to dispose of hazardous materials such as car batteries, old paint and other items that cannot be placed in regular sanitary landfills.
Hazardous Waste Facility
The Shelby County Household Hazardous Waste facility is open to the public Tuesdays and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.
