Regional Location
Located in southeast Shelby County, Germantown is convenient to Memphis International Airport and downtown Memphis. It is one of six suburban municipalities adjacent to Memphis. The distance from the Germantown Municipal Center to downtown Memphis is approximately 17 miles.

Germantown is also part of a even larger metropolitan area, the Memphis Metropolitan Statistical Area, which contains more than one million people in five counties: Crittenden County, Arkansas; DeSoto County, Mississippi, and Fayette, Shelby and Tipton Counties in Tennessee.

Demographics
The City of Germantown's 2006 special census recorded a city population of 40,977. The 2000 U.S. Census reports the largest percentage of people in Germantown is between the ages of 45 and 54. The second largest percentage of population is between the ages of 35 and 44. The median age is 41.3 years old.

There are 13,220 households in Germantown with an average size of 3.14 people. Forty-one percent of the households have children under 18 years old.

Germantown has 13,676 total housing units with a 97% occupancy rate. Of the 13,220 occupied housing units, 89% percent are owner-occupied and 11% are renter-occupied.

The average value for owner occupied housing in zip code 38138 is $238,013. The average home price in zip code 38139 is $353,694.

Germantown is one of only 29 cities in the nation that can take pride in its AAA Bond rating from both Moody's and Standard & Poor.

Germantown has the lowest crime rate for any city its size in the state of Tennessee and the police and fire departments have an average emergency response time of under five minutes.

Germantown has a temperate climate. Winters are brief and mild, with the coldest days during January and February.

Medical Facilities and Services
Germantown offers a wide variety of medical facilities and services that range from numerous private practices to well-known specialty clinics. Medical care in the city includes a full service hospital, Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare Germantown Hospital, with emergency and outpatient services, orthopedic treatment, obstetric care and a cardiac wellness center, that includes open heart surgery. Other facilities in the city include the Campbell Clinic, the Campbell Clinic Surgery, the Neurological Surgery Center, Baptist Rehabilitation Hospital, Radiation Oncology Center, Ambulatory Surgery Center and University of Tennessee Medical Group. The range of medical services along Wolf River Boulevard in Germantown stretches from A to Z through the medical specialties alphabet from allergy and immunization services to urology. Facilities include the Wolf River Professional Center and the Wolf River Medical Building/Mid-South Heart Institute. Recently, Stern Cardiovascular Center and Boston Baskin Cancer Group have announced plans to open in this area.

Parks and Recreation
With a park within one mile of most residences in Germantown, this community has 700 acres of parkland, the highest percentage of municipal acreage devoted to parks in Tennessee. Several miles of the the Germantown Greenway are complete; the linear park will eventually connect parks in a 22-mile loop encircling the city. Germantown also offers a full-service recreational facility featuring more than 9,000 square feet of fitness center, an indoor pool, two outdoor pools, racquetball courts, basketball court, the great hall for large meetings and banquets, a high-tech audio visual meeting room plus other amenities. Talk of the Town
The City newsletter enclosed with each monthly utility bill describes events and activities and timely information and advisories about City ordinances and operations. It also includes a convenient form for sending questions or comments to the City.

Annual Report Calender
Developed by City Staff and illustrated with photos submitted by citizens, the calendar contains general information about City government and a monthly schedule of official meetings and civic activities. It is mailed each December to every household.

GHS-TV Channel 17
Operating as the community access station, the Germantown High School student-run station televises live proceeding of the Board of Mayor and Alderman on the second and fourth Mondays of the month. It also provides live coverage of the Planning Commission, Design Review Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals. GHS produces and broadcasts "Spotlight on Germantown", a 30-minute show hosted by the mayor, during the first week of each month September through May.

The City publishes and distributes FYI, a catalog of programs and classes, 4 times a year. FYI is mailed to every resident and is also available in the Parks and Recreation main office.
