Parks and Recreation

Strengthening the community and creating quality recreation and leisure experiences is the mission of the award-winning Germantown Parks and Recreation department. Three divisions: parks and recreation administration and planning, recreation and sports, and rangers enable the department the unique ability of being able to accomplish this mission in a variety of ways.

In 1996, the Germantown Parks and Recreation department became accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Parks & Recreation Agencies. This made the department the 12th department in the nation and the only department in Tennessee to earn this accreditation. In May 2001 and 2006, the department was re-accredited. This process will reoccur in 2011.

Recreation and Sports
Development, administration and implementation of public recreation programs, community events, and leisure services are the focus of the Recreation Division. Marketing of the entire department is also coordinated by this section.

Park Rangers
Safe and secure parks and facilities are a priority in Germantown. Park rangers patrol every park. If help is needed, have a question or just want to converse about trees, wildlife or native plants, look for a uniformed ranger in a marked City vehicle.

Administration and Planning
Serving as the nucleus of the Parks and Recreation Department, the administrative division provides overall management and supervision for all functions within the department. Key roles are to promote advocacy for parks, recreation and leisure services and support staff in community outreach and marketing initiatives. This division also serves as the first point of contact for citizens, participants and visitors. Department schedules and central files are maintained by this division, as well as coordination of deposits and receipts, general purchasing of office supplies and managing the Mayor’s Action Center database.

To ensure a park system of the highest standards, this division is responsible for the development of the parks capital improvements projects and infrastructure budgets, parks project management, community needs assessments, park designs, park project plans and specifications, and contract management. Other responsibilities include horticulture and landscaping planning for City properties, grant development and administration, and direction and evaluation of parks maintenance activities.
