The Mayor

Sharon GoldsworthySharon Goldsworthy is serving her fourth four-year term as mayor of Germantown. First elected as an alderman in 1992, she was elected mayor in 1994 and was re-elected in 1998, 2002 and 2006.

In addition to overseeing the administration of city government by professional staff, Goldsworthy serves or participates in local, regional and state organizations. She served three four-year terms on the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations and five years on the State Air Pollution Control Board, in both positions representing the interests of municipalities across the state. She was a member of the Governor's Council on Excellence in Higher Education. She is a member of the Chickasaw Basin Authority, Metropolitan Planning Organization Transportation Planning Board and Regional Rail Steering Committee.

She is a member of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, several of its committees, Women Mayors Caucus and Republican Mayors and Local Officials. She served four terms as president of Tennessee Women in Government (TWIG) and is a former district director of the Tennessee Municipal League and former TWIG representative. She is a member and past president of the West Tennessee Mayors Association, a past member of the Municipal Technical Advisory Services Advisory Committee, served five years as a representative to the Memphis Area Association of Governments, and is a graduate of Local Government Leadership Program, a graduate and past trustee of the WestStar Leadership program of West Tennessee and a 1996 graduate of Leadership Memphis and past member of its board of directors.

She is a member of the board of Habitat for Humanity Memphis Affiliate, past president of the University of Memphis Society, a current director and past secretary of the Germantown Area Chamber of Commerce board of directors, a past director on the board of the Mid-South Council of Girls Scouts, a past member and secretary of the Wolf River Conservancy board of directors and a member of the Conservancy advisory board of trustees. She is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Germantown and has served as president, president elect, vice president, secretary and director of the club. Her civic involvement includes five terms as a PTA president and two terms as a Shelby County PTA Council officer. She is a member of the Germantown Garden Club, English Meadows Neighborhood Association and League of Women Voters.

She is a member and elder of Germantown Presbyterian Church. A native of Kansas, she holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from Kansas State University. She and her husband, Jim, have lived in Germantown since 1977. They have an adult daughter, Shannon Goldsworthy Phillips, and a granddaughter.
