The Germantown Police Department is served by 80 sworn police officers and has a total of more than 130 men and women working to ensure Germantown remains one of the safest cities in the Southeast. It strives to maintain a strong partnership with its citizens and would not be as effective without the communication and support it receives from the community.

Traffic is one of our primary concerns. We believe we can reduce the number and severity of automobile crashes through high visibility and strict enforcement of traffic laws. Traffic enforcement is enhanced by the implementation of automated red light enforcement at several intersections within the city. A desk officer is on duty at the Police Department at the Municipal Center during business hours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Door-to-Door Sales
With recent complaints about magazine subscription salesmen and the seasonal influx of persons offering yard and home repair services, the Germantown Police Department advises that almost all door-to-door solicitation is illegal in Germantown and advises residents to be wary of door-to-door solicitors.

City ordinance prohibits any person from selling or offering for sale on streets, public or private property or from motor vehicles any goods, wares, merchandize, food, drinks, meats, firewood, trees and landscaping products.

Newpaper delivery people, merchants who deliver goods in the regular course of business (such as florists, dry cleaners, pizza delivery, etc.) and persons soliciting for IRS-qualified charities, religious organizations or non-profits are allowed to go house-to-house.

The Police Department encourages citizens to call 757-7339 whenever they observe violations of the City's door-to-door sales ordinances. Officers will respond to complaints about solicitors and check whether they are acting in accord with city and state law. Violators can be issued a City ordinance summons.

GPD does not register or issue permits to any solicitors. Any permit purportedly issued by Shelby County government for door-to-door solicitation is not valid in Germantown.

Police advise residents to be guarded when any stranger comes to the door and suggests using door peepholes or glancing through windows to check on unexpected visitors. If the stranger appears suspicious, citizens should not open the door but should call the police.
