First Date to Open at the Germantown Community Theatre

Post Date:03/12/2018 4:30 PM
First Date, a musical about the age-old problem of how opposites can fall in love, opens March 23 at Germantown Community Theatre (GCT), located at 3037 Forest Hill-Irene Road. The 90-minute musical was created by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner and based off a book written by Austin Winsberg. The GCT production is co-directed by husband and wife team Brian and Rachel Everson. Musical direction for the production is provided by Jason Eschhofen. Featured are Ryan Gilliam as Aaron, an uptight, nerdy investment banker (recently jilted) and Christina Hernandez as Casey, a sardonic, edgy serial dater (who always chooses the wrong guy). Their roller coaster ride is marked by Google background checks and ensemble admonishments from disapproving relatives, exes, best friends and even the waiter. Other roles are played by an engaging cast including Court Nixon (Gabe), Jess Brookes (Grandma Ida/Lauren), Jimmy Hoxie (Waiter), and Nichol Pritchard (Allison). The Everson's saw First Date in 2013 at New York’s Longacre Theatre, where it opened after premiering in Seattle. They thought it was not just a witty little musical but also a show with a message. Brian Everson adds , “We fell in love with the show. It’s not only an entertaining riff on modern dating and its pitfalls, but a show with a message. Just like Aaron and Casey, we are all affected by the past. It is ultimately our own decisions to either hinder us or propel us forward. Rachel and I are so pleased to have the opportunity to share this show with Germantown and the Memphis Metropolitan area for the first time.”

First Date runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $28 for adults or $17 for seniors and students. Tickets are available for purchase by calling the box office at (901) 453-7447 or by visiting The musical includes some adult situations and language and may not be suitable for children. The production is sponsored in part by BancorpSouth.
