Big Read Set to Kickoff Next Weekend

Post Date:01/10/2019 4:30 PM

For the third time since 2015, the City of Germantown has received a $12,500 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to host the Big Read. Managed by Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read helps to broaden our understanding of our world, our communities and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. Germantown is the only recipient in the state for 2019 and one of 79 participating communities nationally.

The city-wide reading events will take place January 19 through February 23 and focus on the book The Namesake by Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Jhumpa Lahiri. The novel describes the struggles and hardships of a Bengali couple who immigrate to the United States to form a life outside of everything they are accustomed to.

The City is excited to partner with organizations such as the Germantown Performing Arts Center (GPAC), the Germantown Community Library, the Indian Community Fund for Greater Memphis, WKNO-FM, the Germantown Education Commission and Germantown Community Theatre (GCT) to provide programs all ages can enjoy.

The Germantown Community Library has free copies of The Namesake available while supplies last. The library also has book club sets of the novel available if your club is interested in participating in the Big Read.
