Hagen Receives Scholarship for Work with Special Populations

Post Date:06/11/2019 4:00 PM
Since 2016, Germantown resident and library employee Lisa Hagen has been managing the library’s Next Chapter Book Club (NCBC) for adults with special needs. Formerly the Flippin’ Pages Book Club, the Next Chapter Book Club is committed to providing weekly opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to read, learn and make friends in a relaxed, community setting. “Being able to improve and enrich the program was very important to me,” said Lisa Hagen. The book club holds a special place in Lisa’s heart, as a mother of two sons with high-functioning autism.

The Germantown Community Library formally joined the national NCBC program in early 2017 and hosts club meetings every Thursday. Not only does the book club read books, but they also provide enrichment opportunities. For example, when the club read Harry Houdini’s biography, Lisa scheduled a magician to come out to the library for a private show. The club has seen performances of Annie at the New Day Theater and has also gone to see Wonder in theatres after completing the book. Another initiative of the NCBC is inclusivity and visibility within the community, therefore the club meets at a local Germantown business to read and enjoy a meal.

Last week, the national NCBC organization contacted Lisa and announced that she has received an all expenses paid scholarship to travel to Germany for a unique opportunity to interact with international NCBC counterparts in Cologne and Berlin. The trip will be a nice blend of information exchange about the book clubs, planned sightseeing opportunities, a lecture at the University of Cologne and time to explore independently. “I am beyond thrilled to be chosen for a scholarship to go to Germany,’ said Ms. Hagen. “This is such an honor to our program and the Germantown Community Library,” she added.
