Healthy Germantown is Gearing Up for Walk Across Tennessee

Walk Across Tennessee is back in Germantown to get residents moving. Walk Across Tennessee is a team-based fitness program encouraging team members to cumulatively move the equivalent of the length of Tennessee (about 500 miles) or more. This program has been presented in communities across Tennessee for over 20 years, and this is the third year for Germantown. This year, Healthy Germantown is coordinating three different free competitions: citizens, school classrooms and City of Germantown employees.

In coordination with the school schedule, we will begin the Saturday after Fall Break (October 19) and end the Friday before Thanksgiving week (November 22). Teams of five will encourage one another to reach their five week goal and beyond. Need extra incentive? Any team that reaches their goal of 500 miles will gain an automatic prize raffle.

All mileage reported is based on the honor system. Miles will be logged online each week by the captains, and can be walked or converted from other activities. A conversion chart and calculator are available for your convenience. Participants may use tracking devices, but we caution you to ensure you do not count the miles on the tracker and convert them as well.

We will be sharing in your journey along the way with teams of our own and look forward to seeing your photos and success stories. If you would like to track numbers specific to your organization let us know, ask your captains to include your organization name on the team registration form.

How it works:
• Five-week event that takes place October 19 through November 22
• Five members per team, each team with their own captain
• Total team mileage logged weekly (Saturday to Friday)
• Goal: Each team should log at least 500 miles in five weeks
• Miles can be walked or converted from other activities (ex: 15 minutes bicycling = one mile). See conversion chart on the "Totals" tab for details. If converting from steps, 2000 steps = 1 mile.
• Each team that reaches at least 500 miles will be entered into a prize raffle
• Photo Contest: Get caught being healthy!

How to get started:
• Gather your family or friends at work, neighbors, club members - encourage them to form multiple teams to compete against each other.
• Each team captain must complete a team registration form, and each of the 5 team members (including the captain) must complete an individual registration form.
• Captains gather individual mileage totals and submit team totals each week.
• There is no charge for participation.
