Heart Health Takes Center Stage in Germantown This February

February is American Heart Month, and on Friday, February 6, Germantown will join communities across the nation in observing National Wear Red Day. This day raises awareness of heart disease, the leading cause of death for women, and reminds us that heart health is a year-round priority.
Residents and businesses are encouraged to participate by wearing red, lighting up buildings in red, and sharing photos or videos on social media using the hashtag #GermantownGoRed. These simple actions help spark conversations and show support for heart health in our community.
Germantown is also working to become a certified HEARTsafe Community through a partnership with the American Heart Association. Led by the Fire Department, this initiative brings together first responders, medical professionals, students and residents to improve emergency preparedness and heart health awareness. Efforts include hands-only CPR training, faster EMS response times, and wider access to Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) across the city.
The Germantown Fire Department responds to about 5,000 calls annually, roughly 70 percent of which are medical emergencies. Among these are 45 to 60 cardiac arrests each year. Rapid bystander intervention, like performing CPR, can make a life-saving difference before EMS arrives. To learn how to do hands-only CPR, watch this video.
Last year, Germantown earned the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline EMS Gold Level Achievement Award, reflecting the city’s dedication to providing timely, research-based care for severe heart attacks and strokes.
This National Wear Red Day, show your support for heart health, honor the efforts of first responders, and consider learning hands-only CPR — because every action helps save lives.
