As Germantown continues the transition to the new residential solid waste contract, we’ve seen several recurring questions and some outdated information circulating online. Residents are encouraged to visit the City’s Trash and Recycling webpage at Germantown-TN.gov/Trash for the latest update, frequently asked questions and collection guidelines.
To help ensure everyone has the most accurate information, here are a few important reminders.
Backdoor Customers Must Use City-Issued Carts
Residents enrolled in backdoor household trash collection are required to use City-issued trash and recycling carts that are compatible with Waste Pro’s collection equipment.
Waste Pro recently received an additional shipment of 64-gallon backdoor trash carts and continues delivering them to residents with outstanding requests. If you’re a backdoor customer still waiting on your City-issued carts, Waste Pro will continue servicing up to two personal trash carts until your new carts are delivered.
If you are a backdoor customer and need to order a City-issued cart, contact Customer Service by phone at (901) 757-7200 or via email at CustomerService@Germantown-TN.gov. Backdoor customers may also request one additional trash cart at no additional monthly cost.
Waiting On A Larger Recycling Cart?
Waste Pro has placed an expedited order for additional City-branded 96-gallon recycling carts after initial demand exceeded the available inventory. Those carts are expected to arrive over the coming weeks and will be used to fulfill all outstanding exchange requests.
In the meantime, residents waiting on a 96-gallon recycling cart should continue using their existing 64-gallon recycling cart. There is no need to leave your recycling cart at the curb while you wait. Instead, please keep it visible and easily accessible from the street so Waste Pro crews can locate it when it’s time to complete the exchange.
It’s not too late to request an upgrade. Contact Customer Service by phone at (901) 757-7200 or via email at CustomerService@Germantown-TN.gov.
Glass is Not Accepted for Curbside Recycling
Glass is not accepted in Germantown’s curbside recycling program. This is not a new policy and has been in place for some time.
Because there is very little market for recycled glass in our region, most Mid-South municipalities no longer accept it through curbside collection. In single-stream recycling systems, broken glass contaminates paper, cardboard and plastic, reducing the value of those recyclable materials.
Understanding Bulk Waste
Bulk waste refers to large household items that do not fit inside your trash cart, such as:
Residents may place up to five cubic yards of bulk waste at the curb each week.
Bulk waste does not include extra household trash or construction and demolition debris such as carpet, sheetrock, fencing, lumber, roofing materials, concrete, bricks or similar materials.
Use the Current Collection Guide
To make sure you’re following the most current collection guidelines, review the latest Trash, Recycling and Yard Debris Guide at Germantown-TN.gov/Trash. The guide provides a quick visual reference showing what is and is not accepted for curbside collection. Printed copies are available at City Hall, 1930 South Germantown Road.
