Taking Root: Germantown Plants 44 New Trees for a Greener Future
Through an ongoing tree mitigation project that began in fall 2025, the City is actively working to replace approximately 175 inches of trees removed due to developments and infrastructure updates. A total of 44 new trees have already taken root across local parks and public spaces, with even more on the way to ensure Germantown’s iconic canopy continues to thrive.
“It’s all about keeping Germantown beautiful,” said Bryan Piefer, Natural Resource Manager and City Arborist. “This is something the City is serious about, keeping our tree canopy over 40%, which is something we’re really proud of, as it has earned Germantown Tree City USA and Tree City of the World designations.”
Tree City USA and Tree City of the World are annual national recognition programs by the Arbor Day Foundation with high standards and requirements that cities must meet. Germantown has been a Tree City USA community for 34 years and a Tree City of the World for five years.
Of the 44 new trees, the City’s Natural Resources department planted 14 trees at the Bob Haley Complex and 30 trees at Johnson Road Park.
“At Johnson Road Park, this is stage one of probably two to three stages of planting we’ll do around the lakes and levees of the pond to try to help the trees over here,” Piefer said. “Obviously, we’ve got more locations in the City to come, such as medians.”
These recent saplings join numerous trees already planted at Riverdale Park, Oaklawn, the Farm Park and Poplar Estates Park. Exceptional tree care enhances the quality of life for Germantown residents and preserves the local environment for future generations.
