City of Germantown
Home MenuSingle-Family Property Maintenance Requirements
If there’s one phrase that defines Germantown, it’s “a premier residential community.” That identity is no accident—city leaders in the 1960s set a deliberate course to make Germantown an exceptional place to live and raise a family.
To support this vision, the City has adopted ordinances that promote respectful behavior among neighbors. These laws are not designed to be burdensome but to ensure that one resident’s actions—or inaction—don’t negatively impact the broader community.

Yard and Grounds Maintenance
- Grass, weeds and noxious growth must be cut regularly and kept below 6 inches.
- Trash and debris must be removed to prevent health and safety hazards.
- Dead trees must be removed by the property owner.
- Vegetation must not obstruct drivers’ views at intersections.
Double Frontage Lots
Lots with streets along both the front and rear are subject to specific maintenance rules:
- Owners must maintain grass, trees and shrubs all the way to the rear curb—even if a fence is present.
- Fences must be kept in good repair.
- If sidewalks are present along both front and rear, owners must maintain both areas and remove debris from the rear to the front curb for collection.
Sidewalks
- Adjacent property owners are responsible for keeping sidewalks clear and in good condition.
- Sidewalk inspections are required prior to property sales. Apply here for a sidewalk inspection.
- Tree limbs must be trimmed to 8 feet above sidewalks and 12 feet above streets.
Open Ditches and Storm Drains
- Dumping anything—yard waste, chemicals, paint, oil or debris—into ditches or storm drains is illegal. It can cause flooding and pollute waterways.
- Blowing grass or leaves into the street also violates City code.
- To report a violation:
- Weekdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Call Code Compliance at (901) 757-7263
- After hours, weekends and holidays: Call Germantown Police at (901) 757-7338
