The mission of the Germantown Traffic Department is to provide a high quality, safe, well maintained and efficient transportation system that allows for all modes of transportation within and through the City of Germantown.

Department Responsibilities
• Operation and maintenance for 39 signalized intersections and 11 school zones with advanced
   warning lights
• Monitoring and adjustment of intersection signal timing
• Design and installation of signage and striping
• Response to citizen concerns and questions regarding traffic


Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do when a traffic signal is not operating correctly?
If the signal is FLASHING RED, stop until you can safely pass through the intersection.
If the signal is FLASHING YELLOW, proceed slowly through the intersection.
If the signal is NOT OPERATING, treat the intersection as an all-way stop.

Can I request a stop sign to be installed on my street?
Due potential implications on safety and traffic, the installation of stop signs should only be done as a result of an engineering study. To request an intersection study, contact Tim Gwaltney at TGwaltney@Germantown-TN.gov or (901) 757-7232.

Can a children at play sign be installed in my neighborhood?
These signs are intended to be installed near parks and schools. These signs are not typically applicable to residential streets.

Can a speed bump be installed on my street?
