Installing a swimming pool in Germantown requires a permit to ensure safety and compliance with city ordinances.
Permit Information:
- Issuing Office: Economic and Community Development, 1920 S. Germantown Road
- Review Process: Proposed pool projects are reviewed for compliance with zoning ordinances, setback requirements, easements, and accessory item regulations.
- Fees: Permit fees vary depending on the pool project. Contact the Economic and Community Development office for specific fee information.
- Late Fee: Permit fees are doubled if work begins before a permit is issued.
Important Safety and Compliance Requirements:
- Flood Fringe: Special installation requirements apply to properties located in the flood fringe.

- Fencing: A fence at least 4 feet high is mandatory around the property or the pool area.
- Spacing between vertical and horizontal pieces cannot exceed 4 inches.
- Horizontal components should be on the inside of the fence to prevent climbing.
- Self-latching gate closures must be at least 4 feet above the ground.
- An illustration may be required for fences with unusual designs.
- Maintenance: Fences and gates must be maintained in good repair at all times to prevent unauthorized access. Open gates or missing fence sections are code violations.
- Water Quality: Pool water must be properly treated with chemicals to prevent it from becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes or other health hazards.
- Drainage: Pool water containing chemicals must not be drained onto ground surfaces or into the City storm drainage system. It must be drained into the sanitary sewer system.
- Nuisance: The pool must not create a nuisance for neighbors or the surrounding neighborhood.
