Looking for a Volunteer Opportunity? Join the Farm Park
Farm Hands volunteer program!
The Basics: Bobby Lanier Farm Park volunteers are lovingly referred to as "Farm Hands," even though volunteers aren't necessarily farming. Farm hands are essential to every aspect of the mission from working board members to informational booth workers. Without Farm Hands, the Farm Park simply wouldn't be able to meet the goals of educating the community in sustainability.
Who: Volunteer opportunities are available for adults, teens, families, scout troops and service groups looking to better their community and environment with a creative and positive outlook.
Where: Most events take place at the Bobby Lanier Farm Park, but some volunteer hours may be spent in the Parks and Recreation office or at local elementary schools.
How do I get started: Contact Joni Roberts at JRoberts@Germantown-TN.gov.
Job Overview: Farm Hands could hold a number of different positions and vary week to week. The following are jobs that we need help with:
Working the Farmer's Market
Information Booth: Visitors to the market may need direction or just want general information regarding the Farm Park mission and activities. Ex: "Are all these vendors organic?", "Where can I purchase radishes?", "How can I join the community garden?". Information booth workers will answer these questions and come to learn the inner workings and heart of our farmers market. Minimum time Commitment: 3 hours on Thursday afternoons and evenings at the Farm Park Farmers Market.
Market Counters: Keeping track of attendance is important to the market viability. Periodically throughout the market we count customers entering the market. Market Counters will be provided with a click-counter and clip board. Minimum time Commitment: 10 minutes of the hour for as many hours as you like. This opportunity allows for shopping time between counts.
Vendor Check- In: As each vendor pulls in, Farm Hands will check their name off a list, record time, tell them their assigned location number and direct them to their location, reminding them to not block other vendors' stalls and accesses. Minimum Time Commitment: 30 minutes at the Thursday Farm Park Farmer's Market.
Market Patrol: Market patrol will keep the area picked up and safe! Duties may include asking vendors if they need a break, refreshing trash bins and checking on the garden speaker. Minimum Time Commitment: 3 1/2 hrs during the Thursday evening Farm Park Farmers Market.
The Farm Park hosts a variety of special events such as health fairs, harvest festivals, scarecrow contests, and field trips. Assistance is needed in preparing and successfully executing all aspects of these events. Listed below are several mainstay events of the Farm Park.
