Home MenuWater Meter Replacement Project
The City of Germantown is undertaking an important infrastructure improvement project to replace all residential and commercial water meters citywide. The initiative is expected to be completed by summer 2026.
AMI Project Update – November 12, 2025
9,506 meters have been installed, bringing the project to 66.15% completion.
What’s Happening?
The City’s Public Works Department, in partnership with Core & Main and their subcontractor VEPO, will install advanced Kamstrup ultrasonic water meters for all 14,500 water customers. These new meters are designed to:
-
Provide more accurate water usage readings.
-
Offer residents real-time access to water usage data via a secure online portal.
-
Automatically transmit readings via radio frequency to the City’s data collectors, improving service accuracy and efficiency.
Key Benefits of the New Meters
-
Enhanced Accuracy: Precise readings ensure accurate billing and detailed usage insights.
-
Proactive Leak Detection: Early identification of leaks prevents costly surprises and supports conservation.
-
Improved Customer Service: Available data enables faster response to service requests and alerts for unusual usage.
-
Efficiency and Convenience: The automated system eliminates manual readings, reducing costs and enhancing service.
-
Sustainability: The new system promotes responsible water usage and resource preservation.
What to Expect During Installation
Contractors will work systematically across neighborhoods to replace water meters. Here’s what residents can expect:
-
Advance Notifications: Residents who have opted in to receive notices from Germantown Alert and are scheduled for meter replacement will be notified via Germantown Alert the week before their scheduled installation. This notice will include details about the upcoming work. The same information will also be available at Germantown-TN.gov/meters. Keep in mind that installation may be delayed due to weather or other extenuating circumstances.
-
Brief Water Service Interruptions: Contractors will knock on doors and attempt to speak with residents before temporarily shutting off water service to replace the meter. If no one answers, the technician will proceed with the replacement, provided there is no obvious water usage (e.g., the meter dial is running, indicating someone is actively using water). In such cases, the technician will return at a later time to avoid disruption.
-
Installation: Replacements typically take around 20 minutes. After the installation is complete, the technician will access a visible hose spigot, if available, to help flush the line of potential air or debris. A door hanger will then be left on the front door with helpful instructions.
-
Identifiable Crews: Installation teams will wear uniforms with VEPO identification and drive clearly marked vehicles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the meter change affect my water pressure or pressure reducing valve?
While your water pressure and access will be impacted during the change out process, there will be no long-term impact to your water pressure.
Will my personal data be secure?
Yes, advanced encryption and secure protocols ensure only water usage data is transmitted.
How long will my water be off during installation?
Meter replacements typically take around 20 minutes.
What if I experience discolored water or air in my lines?
Your water may be discolored temporarily after the installation process has been completed. This can be quickly resolved by running an outside hose faucet or bathtub faucet to clear the line of dirt or sediment.
